How should you build a realistic trip budget?
We currently track costs for Thailand, Bangkok, and Singapore. To avoid budget anxiety, lock in your accommodation and major transfers first—these are the numbers that move the needle. Once the essentials are covered, you can use our destination guides to estimate your daily spending on food and exploring.
Do not begin with one daily number
A ‘daily average’ rarely survives a real trip. In this region, your budget is shaped more by where you sleep, which islands you visit, and how much you value a private car over a crowded bus. Start by checking live room prices for your exact dates and adding in your intercity transfers. Be honest about the ‘must-do’ tours and nightlife—these are the costs that actually drain a wallet faster than a street-food meal.
Make sure you’re labeling costs correctly: is it per person, per room, or for the whole group? Many travel budgets feel tight only because they forget to account for the ‘hidden’ costs like airport deposits, terminal fees, and that first expensive meal after a long flight.
Use country and city budgets differently
A country-wide average won’t help you much when you’re deciding between a beach resort and a city hotel. Use country guides to understand regional price gaps and the cost of moving between stops. A city guide is much better for choosing between neighborhoods, pricing out local transit, and planning your nights out. Bangkok’s prices aren’t the same as a rural village, and Singapore requires a completely different approach to value.
Keep your shopping budget and late-night splurges separate from your survival costs. If the total looks too high, try cutting out repetitive activities before you compromise on a good location or a decent night’s sleep.
Why one daily budget does not travel
